In stormy conditions, it is more difficult to see other vehicles, road signs and the road itself. To stay safe, it is critical that motorists take steps to see and be seen.
Windows: Clean windshield and windows regularly on the inside and outside. Drivers who smoke should take extra care to make sure their interior windows are clear of a buildup of smoke residue.
Lights: Check car lights regularly. Make sure headlights, taillights, brakelights and turn signals are working properly.
Turn Them On: Turn on headlights and windshield wipers when it begins to rain. Many states require headlights be turned on when it's raining or visibility is reduced to less than 500 feet.
Pull Over: When visibility is limited, or the edges of the road and other vehicles cannot be seen at a safe distance, pull over and wait for the rain to ease up. Try to stop at a rest area or other protected spot.
Roadside: If the roadside is your only option, pull over as far as possible, preferably past the end of a guardrail. Keep headlights on and turn on emergency flashers to alert other drivers. Slow Down: Rain reduces visibility and creates slippery conditions that require motorists to use extra caution. Drivers should also increase the distance between vehicles to improve traction.
